Nasaump
Nasaump is a traditional Wampanoag corn porridge made from ground corn and water, with ingredients such as berries, nuts, and seeds providing additional flavor and nourishment. Long before oatmeal and other hot cereals became commonplace on American breakfast tables, preparations such as nasaump provided a simple, hearty meal from foods native to the region.
Recipe makes 6 servings
Whatcha Need
- 1 ½ cups coarse-ground cornmeal
- 1 cup fresh or dried berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or a combination
- ½ cup crushed walnuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, or a combination
- 1 quart (4 cups) water
- Maple sugar or maple syrup, to taste (optional)
Whatcha Do
- Bring the water to a boil in a medium saucepan.
- Gradually stir in the cornmeal, whisking or stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
- Reduce the heat to low and add the berries and crushed nuts or seeds.
- Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring frequently, until the cornmeal is fully cooked and the mixture has thickened to the consistency of oatmeal. Add a little additional water if the porridge becomes too thick before the cornmeal is tender.
- Remove from the heat and serve warm. If desired, sweeten individual servings with a little maple sugar or maple syrup.
