Irish Soda Bread

Recipe makes 1 loaf

Whatcha Need

  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1¾ cups buttermilk

Whatcha Do

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Gradually add the buttermilk, stirring until the dough comes together.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently use until it forms a soft ball.
  4. Shape into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet.
  5. Cut a deep cross in the top of the loaf and bake for 30-35 minutes, until the crust is golden and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.

    Note

Cutting the cross in the top of soda bread helps the loaf bake evenly, though Irish folklore also says it was done to “let the fairies out.”
