Shoofly Pie

Depression Era Shoofly Pie

This authentic Pennsylvania Dutch recipe was taken from the Mennonite Community Cookbook of Lancaster County. Recipe makes 1 pie.

Whatcha Need:

  • 1 frozen 9-inch deep-dish pie crust, thawed
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 3/4 cup hot water
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening

Whatcha Do:

  1. Preheat oven to 400ºF.

  2. In a large bowl, place molasses, hot water, and baking soda; mix until well combined.

  3. In another bowl, mix the flour and brown sugar. Using a fork or pastry blender cut in the shortening a little at a time until you get a crumbly mixture.

  4. Place pie shell on a rimmed baking sheet and spread half of the crumb mixture evenly over the bottom. Pour molasses mixture over the crumbs.

  5. Add the remaining half of the crumb mixture on top.

  6. Bake pie for 15 minutes at 400 degrees, then lower oven heat to 350 degrees and continuer to bake for another 30 minutes.

  7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 30 minutes before serving.
