New York Pushcart Hot Dog
The recipe for onion sauce was given to me by a former co-worker and friend who sold his pushcart after 14 years selling hot dogs in New York City’s Central Park
Recipe makes 8 servings
Whatcha Need
- 8 Sabrett all-beef frankfurters, natural casing
- 2 Tablespoons good olive oil
- 2 medium yellow onions, sliced thin
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup water
- 1-1/3 cup sauerkraut
- Spicy brown mustard, to taste
- 8 plain six-inch side-split hot dog buns
Whatcha Do
-
Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and sauté until soft but not brown. Stir in the cinnamon, chili powder, and cayenne. Cook for 1 minute longer.
-
Add ketchup and water, stir to combine well. Bring mixture to a simmer and cook until sauce thickens, about 12 to 15 minutes.
-
In large saucepan bring water to a boil over medium-high heat. Drop in franks and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, until hot throughout.
-
Place franks in buns and top with sauerkraut, onion sauce, and spicy mustard. Serve and enjoy.
