Grandma Etchieson’s Applesauce Cake

Recipe makes one 8-inch cake (9 servings)

Whatcha Need

  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup molasses
    • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup raisins
  • ½ cup walnut pieces

Whatcha Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350℉. Butter inside of an 8 x 8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Add molasses and applesauce and stir to combine.
  3. In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Slowly add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring well until a smooth batter forms.
  5. Pour into the prepared dish and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the center springs back when lightly pressed.
  6. Cool completely before cutting into 9 pieces. Serve plain or frosted.
